Help Bring The Kids from Khayelitsha to the 2013 LA Salsa Fest
Every year one of the world’s largest latin music and dance events is held in Los Angeles, CA. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this coming May will be the LA Salsa Fest. Created and co-produced by Albert Torres since 1998, the LA Salsa Fest has been a staple among the Salsa dancing community and continues to attract over 20,000 attendees annually.
This year Albert Torres has invited a special dance group to perform at the LA Salsa Fest—the kids of Khayelitsha (a township of Capetown), South Africa. On a recent trip to South Africa, one of the highlights of Albert Torres’ trip was seeing these kids perform. Albert was so impressed by their performance that he extended an invitation for them to represent South Africa for the first time in the LA Salsa Festival’s history.
Watch the video below to hear what Albert said about the experience.

Salsa Moment Sunday
A few months back I attended the 12th Annual New York International Salsa Congress. This was my fourth NYC Salsa Congress that I had attended and as always, I meet so many interesting people from around the world. Sometimes in these small conversations you get to hear some amazing stories of how Salsa dancing has affected their lives. I call these stories “Salsa Moments.”
Everyone that is a passionate about the art of Salsa dancing has a story or moment in their Salsa journey that will live with them forever. For me it was my first social that had I attended.
After hearing some of these stories I was so inspired and thought that it would be great for people to share their “Salsa Moments” on salsapicao.com. So I reached out to a few of my other Salsa friends from around the globe to see what they thought of the idea and asked if they would be willing to share their stories.
Today, Jerome Mester de Trevino will be sharing his ”Salsa Moment.” I hope that this will be the first of many Salsa Moment Sundays.
Here is Jerome’s ”Salsa Moment”…

Leading vs. Following

Some of the best salsa dancers in the world have mastered the art of leading and the art of following.
Here’s a great video of Jorjet Alcocer first showing off her leading skills then switching over to her great follow skills without missing a beat. Simply impressive.
